Lesson Overview

Before students can investigate ways to improve a vehicle for the year 2020, they must discover the impact of that vehicle on the environment today. In Lesson 1, they will take a look at one of the most efficient vehicles on the road today and compare it to the majority of different vehicles that are being used. Students will select a vehicle to investigate its fuel efficiency. Students come to understand that greater fuel efficiency is beneficial and compare existing fuel efficiency and pollution values to the desired goals we have for vehicles of the future.

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
  • Define fuel efficiency.
  • List several factors that affect a vehicle's fuel efficiency.
  • Explain the importance of fuel efficiency, particularly as it relates to the environment.
